A total of $13,000 is available for Redwood City residents attending any accredited high School, or students attending a Redwood City high school (Woodside High School, Redwood and Sequoia High Schools) entering college in Fall 2010. Awards are $1,000 each unless otherwise noted.

  • Phillip and Louise Wang Scholarships:  This is the 18th year of the Philip and Louise Wang Annual College Scholarships, which have been generously endowed by the Wangs.  Education and learning are an important part of the Wang family tradition. Phil’s father was a renowned scholar in China and is widely remembered for his work and service to higher education in China and Taiwan.  Phil is a charter member of the Woodside Terrace A.M. Kiwanis Club.

  • Woodside Terrace Kiwanis Club Scholarship:  One of our major projects each year is to award the Woodside Terrace Kiwanis Club Scholarships.  Over its long history, the club has sponsored hundreds of scholarships for Redwood City high school seniors.  The Kiwanis motto and cornerstone is, “We build”.  The Woodside Terrace Kiwanis Club awards these scholarships to “build” the new leaders of our community.

  • The Key Club of Sequoia High Scholarship (a $1500 award):  The Woodside Terrace Kiwanis Club has chartered a Key Club at Sequoia High School. Key Club is the largest high school service organization of its kind with over 140,000 members in approximately 4,000 clubs around the world. It operates under school regulations and draws its memberships from the student body.  Key Club’s objectives are the development of initiative, leadership ability, community service, and good citizenship practices. A Key Club Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding Key Clubber of 2009-2010 based on academic achievement, involvement in Key Club and in the community.

  • The Walter Butler Memorial Scholarship (a $1500 award):  Walter Butler was a long time member of the Woodside Terrace Kiwanis Club. In honor of her husband, Anne Butler has generously granted a scholarship to be awarded to a college bound senior who has improved greatly in his/her four years in high school.

  • The Bogart Family Scholarship: The Bogart Family would like to recognize and encourage a student who has shown academic effort, has participated in community service, and has a financial need. Scholarship Breakfast

Recipients are required to attend the Award Ceremony of the Woodside Terrace Kiwanis Club on an evening to be set the last week in May. Parents and counselors are welcome to attend the award presentation ceremony.  Here is a report on the breakfast held last year:

Our club held our annual Scholarship Breakfast May 28, 2009 at the Waterfront Restaurant. This year we gave out a total of sixteen scholarships.

As always, the young recipients were awesome. They have already accomplished so much in  their short lives!! It makes me feel humble. It also makes me feel confident  that the future is bright, for these will be the leaders for the next generation, and we will be in good hand.

Thank you to all of the Scholarship Committee members (Melanie Souffrant, Margie Carrington, Barbara Liedtke, Bill Lowell, Patty McGowan, Nicole McKay, Bill Morris, Elizabeth Pollard, Irene Peospowidjojo, and Donna Vaillancounrt) for the many hours you put in reading the applications, deciding who gets what, and  organizing the event.

Thank you also to the many donors, almost all of whom are past or present Woodside Terrace AM Kiwanis club members. We are so grateful for your contributions.

The late Sat and Florence Yamada originally set up this scholarship in the 1970’s for a Sequoia High School senior in memory of their late son, Michael Yamada.  Sat was another charter member of this Kiwanis Club and was a well respected and well loved member of our club and the original owner of Flowers by Sat’s. In 1997, Florence Yamada bequeathed funds in her will to continue the Yamada Family Scholarships for years to come.
