Fourth of July Carnival 2008
3 times the fun!
July 4, 5 & 6, 2008

You asked for it....
...You got it.

Kiwanis Carnival
July 4th 2008

This year we offered wristbands at a discounted price of $20.  Booklets of tickets continued to be available for $15. The choice seemed to be a great hit, as we had the biggest fundraiser year to date.  Thank you volunteers! Thank you everyone for making the carnival in 2008 a big success.

Kiwanis Carnival
July 4th 2007

Fourth of July was a great event.  The weather was wonderful.  The people were wonderful.  We sold more soda's and water than I think we have in a long time. Everyone that helped out had fun.  Craig and his son were all dayers. .  My wonderful husband Roy was a workaholic, as always. Sincere and special thank to Elizabeth for all her phone calls.  They really did pay off. I had not seen Dee in a while, but she was there.
The Key Club girls came and stayed for a large part of the day.  Thank yous to all Kiwanians that came out to help. I will list those I remember and please forgive me if I miss anyone.  Thanks to Mo, Rob, Randy and his girlfriend.  They started the day off. Thanks to Donna, Elizabeth, Dee, George K, George and Jan Borg, David, Barbara, Carol, Nicole and my children.  Thank you to Jerry, George’s friend who stayed all day long.  Thank you Mime’s Cafe. We could not have sold hot dogs without your support. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Again, I want to thank Roy for making sure that everything was cleaned and put away.  And thank you for letting me sleep the next morning.
I feel that everyone enjoyed seeing those coming through the carnival having so much fun.  It was a blast and I look forward to next year. Again, sincere thanks to all.   by Melanie Souffront

From 2006.....

I don’t know if it was the fantastic weather of the fantastic advance publicity we had, thanks to Jan Borg, but our July 4th carnival was a whopping success. (The Sunday prior the San Jose Mercury listed our carnival as one of their top 10 picks for July 4th !!). Even before the parade was finished, the hot dog stand was up and busy. Once the parade was over and the carnies turne on the music, the action really began in earnest. It was non-stop all day and well into the evening. Even after the fireworks (when the crowds usually pack up and go home) nobody wanted to leave. We could have sold hot dogs and popcorn at least until midnight!

Needless to say, it was a highly successful fund raiser. The final figures are not in, but it looks like we cleared almost as much in one day as we did on some of our prior 3 day events. The only place where we failed was in member participation.

There were some shifts where nobody signed up at all and others where only one or two signed up, whereas at the slowest times we needed at least 3 and at the end of the evening we needed at least 6 (although for most of that shift we had only 4). Toward the end it was totally chaotic, close to a mob scene, although everybody was being very patient. Clearly everybody was having a good time.

The result of the low member turnout was that some club members had to give up their entire day to make sure all shifts were covered, and several worked a 12-14 hour day with almost no breaks!! One of the things our club is famous for is the way members jump in to help whenever needed, so I can only assume this was an organizational error and we can fix that! This is our major fund raiser for the year and every able bodied club member should help to make it a success. No excuses!

Another thing to keep in mind is that the club must pay for any tickets that are not returned, whether they were sold or not. This year as of the printing of the bulletin we have $3,000 in outstanding ticket books.  But all is not lost. The tickets can be used again next year, or even this year at other Butler carnivals. So, if you still have ticket money to turn in, please do so ASAP. If you still have unsold tickets, don’t throw them out!!! Please hand them in so we can sell them (or turn them back in) next year.

Minor glitches aside, we had a great event and even the Butler people were pretty darned happy. They have already committed to a one day carnival again next year. Many thanks to those who worked so hard to make our carnival a huge success.

Moonlit-Fire-Works,
Hotdogs and Poppin’-Hot Corn

Fourth of July 2005

That’s the combination that kept everyone coming (in droves) to the famous Woodside Terrace A.M. Kiwanis Hot Dog cart at the annual 4th of July Carnival in Redwood City.

While some members enjoyed paradise at the Kiwanis convention in Hawaii, others were shuffling hot dogs in boats and stuffing bags of popcorn for the thousands of eager patrons both young and old(er):   Donna Vaillancourt, and family, Roy and Melanie Souffront, and family, George Kerewicz, George and Jan Borg, Al Quebec, Glenn Peterman, El Fowler, Elizabeth Gheleta and daughter, Carol Stewart and sons, Lecia Roundtree, Patty McGowan, Maureen, Rob and Randy Fish, Jill Solari, Waveny Nedd, Glenn Lew and son, Jeffrey, David and Kelli Amann, Paul Mangan and family, Barbara Liedtke, Glenda Maguire and son Dylan, Beth Yamada, Bill Lowell, Mike Akana, Gracie Allen, Jasmine Freeman, and Geri Myers were all there with big smiles and lots of energy.

Roy Souffrant Jr., was becoming quite an expert at reeling people in, (like a true salesman), to buy not only a hot dog, but of course, chips, popcorn and a soda for all.  George Borg is a great “Hot Dog Barker” and people gravitated to his lyrics, “Hotttt-Dogggs!  Get your Hotttt-Dogggs!!” Little Fiona Mangan was just thrilled to win 5 “baby” gold-fish at the carnival.  I was becoming an expert myself trying to quickly distinguish Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton from many hands straight to the cash box.

Once again, a successful fundraising, hair-raising, and spirit-lifting time with fellow Kiwanians and our wonderful community.

Rides for the Whole Family

Redwood City, California….The Redwood City Fourth of July Carnival, sponsored by the Woodside Terrace A.M. Kiwanis Club, features rides by Butler Amusements, Inc. and has some great attractions built specifically for the whole family to enjoy together. These “Family Rides” offer seats that comfortably hold parents and children together so no one is left waiting on the ground. This year, the midway has many rides for everyone from baby to grandpa.

Rides like the Ferris Wheel are gentle enough for children of any age while offering parents the nostalgic ride of fairs gone by. There are fun houses for families to walk through together complete with funny mirrors and swinging bridges. Other “Family Rides” include the Berry-Go- Round, Dragon Wagon and the Lolly Swing, just to name a few.

In a time when the family is being redefined and the opportunities for spending quality time together are few, the Redwood City Fourth of July Carnival and Butler Amusements strive to provide family fun to remember.

Butler Amusements, Inc. is the largest carnival company in the Western United States, providing carnivals for over 100 different events each year. They operate over 100 amusement rides in six different western states including California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Arizona.
